People think that the croissant is originally from France, but I think the croissant is from Hungary. It could of course also be of Viennese origin. It is true that it is a standard breakfast in France.
Origin: Hungary
In the year 1683 Budapest (Hungary) was besieged by the Turks. To bring the city down, they dug tunnels under the city. In the morning when the bakers were at work they sounded the alarm. The Turks were forced to cancel their departure. Their victory was celebrated, the bakers baked buns in the shape of a crescent moon. Later, the croissant also became known in Austria. The Austrian Marie Antoinette made famous in 1770 with the sandwich in France. In 1853, the croissant was first mentioned in books as luxury bread. In 1869 the croissant was so established that it has become a normal breakfast.
Origin: Vienna
It is also possible that the croissant comes from Vienna, because in 1830 a Boulangerie Viennoise opened in Paris, a name for delicate puff pastry baking, including the croissant. But it is not known whether all the products in this bakery were actually of Viennese origin.
About the croissant
The croissant is a rolled up piece of puff pastry that becomes fluffy in the oven. The puff pastry are very thin slices of dough glued together with butter in between, hence the name: butter croissants. To make croissants you have (most recipes)
Baking croissants
In the Netherlands there is ready-made dough for croissants that has to be rolled up and baked. But I don’t recommend it, that dough usually contains weird things like pork fat. It is more fun to make it yourself, but you do need a lot of patience.
Ham-Cheese croissants
Ham Cheese croissants are just like normal croissants, but then cheese and ham have been added to the roll. You can also make ham-cheese croissants yourself.
