The continued breeding of dogs and cats in particular is still the order of the day. Although laws and regulations and some self-regulation are increasing, we still see terrible excesses in all kinds of areas. Animals who love ?? the beautiful ?? ?? which of course is always very subjective ?? be bred until the ideal animal is there and / or it just makes a lot of money. Some breeders / sellers consider that this is a “live trade” of minor importance.
Breeding on external characteristics often brings misery, because breeding can be done on bad aspects. (but what we like) and animals can be born with deformities. As long as people like it and it is therefore trade, they are bred and / or we want to create the ultimate animal with extremes in the characteristics. Or we don’t want to spend a lot of money on it and then the consequence is that it is ?? cheap ?? should be bred.
Breeding goes on and on
Dogs
There are many examples of larger dogs developing hip dysplasia over time and what is actually already passed into the genes. Animals that are not checked (as a puppy at the vet) and where it remains to be seen whether your dog will develop it.
Also small dogs that need to get a smaller braincase (because we like that better), but with which the eyes are almost pushed out of the braincase through the brain – which does not ring along – or the ?? bulls ?? that should be given an even wider, tougher and thicker shape. As a result, they can hardly breathe or give birth naturally. But also dogs bred (through inbreeding), for example to get a beautiful coat or to emphasize that eye color more etc.
Cats
In cats it is not much different, because the Siamese has at one point been bred in such a way that the head has become more pointed and thinner and the cat started to suffer from it, except that it has a substantial cross-eyed appearance. Or the Persian cat who had to get a flatter head, resulting in a dented nose. Breathing can even become problematic.
Back to basic
Going back to basics is too big a step, but there are new standards ?? and the extreme is taken out again in certain dogs and cats. We find the dented nose of the Persian cat less beautiful and we want a dog with a nice coat, but not at the expense of other things. Dogs do not have to walk around with headaches for life, because we have liked something in a certain role and demand has of course determined the supply.
Problems with the breeders solved?
Did that solve the problem? No definitely not. There are still plenty of breeders who do not organize their breeding in such a way that the best for the animals is achieved. All for money, because the cheaper we breed, the cheaper the animal can be and that still sells better. Even vets sometimes go along with it, issuing health statements, knowing that it’s not kosher how the farm is run or the vet turns a blind eye. After all, these breeders provide business for veterinarians. This information can be read from forums as well as from the network of breeders who do work according to the rules.
Or the breeder who wants to be top of the bill with his / her animals and breeds to the extremes. The question is whether we are still dealing with real animal lovers or whether it is a piece of personal prestige a top animal ?? to produce?
How do you get a healthy animal?
As an animal lover who would like to have a dog or kitten of a certain breed, you will have to be alert yourself. There are some things to watch out for, but do you realize that you are dealing with live trading? and it is never 100% guaranteed. All this does not alter the fact that there are some things you can pay attention to:
- While you may be hooked if you see a little one, bring someone who can stop you if it doesn’t feel right. All young creatures are fun.
- Do not bring an animal to save it. That is a wrong start and you help the breeder with it, because he has reason to continue. Moreover, it is a drop in the ocean.
- Make an appointment and take a good look around. It must be clean, there must be enough space for the animals to move and they must not run off when people come near. Socialization really rests with the breeder.
- The mother must always be there (otherwise those animals may have been bought elsewhere in a mostly breeding shed under appalling conditions) and if the father is there, ask about it.
- The animals must play, look fresh and healthy with a shiny load and especially play with each other. If one has several litters, little ones can also play with each other.
- Ask the breeder for papers and pay attention to his or her appearance. How he or she talks about the animals or how the animals approach the breeder.
- Ask for a doctor’s statement (which, unfortunately, is not always completely kosher).
- Have a contract drawn up (a good breeder already does this himself), in which everything is included.
- Make sure the animals are properly vaccinated (which must be at least two kitten or puppy vaccinations) and without fleas or parasites.
Finally
A nice dog or cat can be an asset to your home environment. But the pain you have when things go wrong is a lot more misery. Do you make sure you have done everything you can to buy a good animal? and then enjoy it.
