What’s the best place to stay in Bangkok? Good question! Bangkok is a city of around 8 million inhabitants, and it is also quite chaotic and has no real center. Finding a suitable hotel in Bangkok is therefore not that easy.

Where are the main sights in Bangkok, where are the best restaurants? And how easy is it to bridge distances in Bangkok? And how do I find the best hotel in Bangkok?
These are questions that everyone who comes to Bangkok for the first time probably asks.
We now know the city very well and will show you which districts of Bangkok are best for overnight stays. We give you our specific hotel tips for Bangkok for each district, of course for every budget.
No matter whether you are looking for a cheap hotel in Bangkok or a very special place to stay. Here you will find the right one!
The best area to stay in Bangkok
Even if the city is huge, you can get a good overview of the touristy areas.
Not because they are few in number, on the contrary, but because they are all quite close together. This also makes them reasonably well connected.
Bangkok consists of a total of 50 districts. But don’t worry, you don’t have to go through them all. For the Bangkok visitor, a more coarse classification makes more sense and that’s what we did.
The most interesting part of Bangkok for tourists can be divided into 3 areas:
- Rattanakosin, the original Bangkok
- Sathorn, the cosmopolitan Bangkok
- Sukhumvit Road, the street for shopping and entertainment
In all three quarters you will find hotels from all price ranges. It can even be difficult to pay particularly high room rates. Yes, because Bangkok offers many luxury hotels at comparatively very low prices. Accommodation prices of over 150 euros per night are hard to find, although there is no lack of luxury hotels.
Our personal hotel recommendations: We like to stay at U Sukhumvit Bangkok in Sukhumvit or at Sribumpen Plus in Sathorn, if it should be cheaper. We can highly recommend both hotels.
We have shown you on the map where the districts are in Bangkok. This gives you a rough overview and gives you a better idea of what we are actually talking about here.

Rattanakosin: Our tips for a hotel in Bangkok’s old town
Conclusion: A hotel in Rattanakosin is the right choice for you if you want to be close to the most famous, historical sights of the city. In the backpacker district around Khao San Road, you will also find some of the cheapest accommodations in Bangkok.
Until the end of the 18th century, this was the real Bangkok. Rattanakosin is also called Rattanakosin Island because it is enclosed to the west by the mighty Chao Phraya River and to the east by the Ong-Ang Canal.

Even if this district does not look particularly like the old town, you will find most of the monuments here, such as the Grand Palace with the Temple of the Emerald Buddha or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, Wat Pho.
With a boat you can quickly cross the Chao-Phraya and visit the beautiful Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn.
In Rattanakosin you will also find Khao San Road, the party mile that is particularly popular with backpackers, with numerous bars, booming music, street food and the cheapest accommodation in Bangkok. But this is also the only point of contact when it comes to the nightlife in Rattanakosin.
From Rattanakosin, you can also take a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride to Chinatown. Here you will find a loud and chaotic jumble of Chinese restaurants, neon lights, Chinese temples and gold dealers.
Advantages of a hotel in Rattanakosin:
- The main attractions of Bangkok can be found here
- Cheapest places to stay
- Direct access to the Chao Phraya River
Disadvantages of a hotel in Rattanakosin:
- The district is poorly connected (no Skytrain station or subway)
- Night life only on Khao San Road
Our hotel tips for Rattanakosin
According to Booking.com, Rattanakosin has an average room rate of €36 per night. Of the neighborhoods presented, this is the cheapest.

Sathorn: Our hotel tips in Bangkok’s Wall Street and nightlife
Conclusion: If you love the big city feeling and like to go out in the evening, then Sathorn is the place for you.
Bangkok’s vibrant downtown Sathorn is southeast of Rattanakosin. It is located in the immediate vicinity of Bangkok’s Silom financial center, and is home to many expats and business travelers. Here are some of Thailand’s leading businesses and the hippest hotels and restaurants.

One of the city’s most famous party streets can be found around the corner: Patpong, a colorful and loud mix of pubs, restaurants, GoGo bars and night markets. The popular Lumphini Park is also nearby, where you can relax from the hustle and bustle of the city and paddle a boat across the artificial lake.
From Chong Nonsi Station, you can take the convenient skytrain and travel to other parts of the city, such as the busy Sukhumvit Road or the international airport. The subway can also be reached on foot in just a few minutes.
Both hotel chains and individual boutique hotels can be found in the Sathorn district. The hotel prices are also a little bit higher than in Rattanakosin, but of course still very low compared to European prices. We stayed at the Sribumpen Plus, very close to the subway and felt very comfortable.
Advantages of a hotel in Sathorn:
- You are in the middle of the action
- The Patpong nightlife district is just around the corner
- Direct access to skytrain and subway
Disadvantages of a hotel in Sathorn:
- Busy area
- Accommodation prices are slightly higher
- Historical monuments in Rattanakosin are a little more complicated to get to
Our hotel tips for Sathorn
At booking.com, an average price of €48 per night is given for hotels in Sathorn, for a total of 47 hotels. If you want to stay here, you can get an acceptable room from as little as €20 per night.

Sukhumvit Road: Our hotel tips for shopping fans
Conclusion: The area around Sukhumvit Road is ideal for you if shopping is one of your priorities in Bangkok and you prefer something a little more “western”.
Sukhumvit Road is one of the longest roads in Thailand. It begins in Bangkok and leads more than 400 kilometers to the Cambodian border. Within Bangkok, the Skytrain runs along the entire street, which means that you have good connections from every hotel here.

The area we would recommend along this road is around the Nana and Asok Skytrain stops. This is where it’s busiest and there are countless shopping opportunities, including the huge mall Terminal 21, markets and restaurants of all kinds.
The Sukhumvit 11 side street also has plenty of restaurants, street food and an active nightlife. This area is popular with tourists from all over the world because you really have everything on your doorstep. If you stroll through the streets here, you feel more in a multicultural, western metropolis than in Asia.
As in Sathorn, you will also find the chicest hotels in town with dozens of floors, rooftop bars, pools and slightly higher prices.
Advantages of a hotel on Sukhumvit Road:
- You are in the middle of the action
- You are well connected by the Skytrain, including to the airport
- Many hotels have rooftop bars or pools
Disadvantages of a hotel on Sukhumvit Road:
- Sukhumvit Road has a lot of traffic
- The historical sights are a bit away
- Higher room rates
Our hotel tips for Sukhumvit
If you enter “Bangkok, Sukhumvit” in the search bar at booking.com, you will get 289 accommodations with an average room price of €50. Since the street is so long, not all hotels are recommended.
Our favorites in Sukhumvit
We stayed at U Sukhumvit Bangkok and felt very comfortable. It’s a bit quieter, a bit from Sukhumvit Road, but offers a tuk-tuk service to Asok Skytrain Station. There is also a great rooftop pool!
