Brown bears can be seen in zoos, but they are also found in the wild. There are several subspecies of the brown bear. Where does the brown bear live and what species do we know?
Habitat
The brown bear is found in America in the North. In Europe, the brown bear is found in countries such as Turkey, Russia, Romania, Poland, Austria, Italy and Greece. The brown bear is also found in Asia. The brown bear mainly lives in areas where few or no people come, these are wooded areas and mountain areas.
European brown bear
The European brown bear is found in Europe, but also in Asia. The males grow to about 1.80 to 2.80 meters long. The females stay a bit smaller and grow to an average length of 1.50 to 2.50 meters. The weight of a good man can be as much as 320 kilos. A small female, on the other hand, sometimes only weighs 60 kilos, but larger females also reach 200 kilos. They live during the day and then forage for food. This food consists of plant foods such as nuts, roots, plants and grasses. Furthermore, the brown bear also eats insects and small mammals, and sometimes even a larger animal. And of course honey, they love it. Only in areas where the bear is disturbed by humans does it emerge at night.
Kodiak bear
The kodiak bear also belongs to the brown bear and is a very large bear. A male can weigh as much as 400 to 500 kilos, but even heavier bears have been seen. This bear is found in North America, on the island of Kodiak from which its name is taken. Also near Alaska.
Mexican bear
This bear is found in Mexico. Around the year 1965, the Mexican bear was no longer sighted, which could indicate that it is extinct.
Grizzly bear
This famous bear lives in North America, in nature parks. This bear can be seen in Yellowstone park, but also in Canadian nature parks. The grizzly bear grows to about 3 feet long with a weight of 600 pounds.
A bear attack
The brown bear is not aggressive and will leave people alone. However, when there is little food to be found, the brown bear increasingly moves to the cities. Females with young can be protective of their young and react aggressively. If you are attacked by a brown bear, it is best to keep still, pretend to be dead. This makes the brown bear think that its victim is no longer a threat and will stop the attack. Don’t fight back or yell. Fighting back is also useless, the bear will always win this against humans. Climbing a tree or jumping into the water is also useless, the bear can do this better and faster. Only the grizzly bear does not climb trees, in this case one can try to climb a tree.
A distance of 200 meters between you and the bear is an even more safe distance. Slowly walk away from the bear and do not call out to him. It can get dangerous at a distance of 100 meters. Stay extremely calm, do not make unexpected movements. Never run but walk back slowly. A bear only needs 3 seconds to travel 50 meters. As soon as the bear reacts to your movements, you stand still. Do not move again until the bear is reassured. Never look the bear directly, this comes across as threatening. If the bear does attack, throw something at it quickly. Dot will distract him. If he does eventually attack, apply the above and consider yourself dead. Curve your body and protect your head and stomach.
