The basis for windshield washer fluid is conventional water. Whether tap water or distilled water is used is primarily a question of cost. It should be noted, however, that limescale deposits can theoretically occur in the lines of the car due to particularly hard water (depending on where you live). If you want to play it safe either check the lime content of the tap water beforehand or go straight to distilled water. Rainwater or well water should not be used, as dirt can clog the fine spray nozzles. Pure water should not be filled into the windshield washer system.
