In Guatemala, the military has reached a remote mountain village badly affected by mudslides caused by the torrential rains from Tropical Storm Eta. It is feared that about 100 people from the village have died.
Many of the dead are buried in their homes that have been inundated by the mudflow. Bad weather, blocked roads and flooded areas make it difficult for rescue services to reach the village.
Previously, the authorities in Guatemala had already confirmed at least 50 deaths in the country. Eta came ashore as a hurricane in Nicaragua on Tuesday, with wind speeds of more than 200 kilometers per hour. Then Eta, weakened to a tropical storm, passed over Honduras and Guatemala.
One of the most powerful
Eta ranks as one of the most powerful hurricanes in Central America in years, although its strength has declined in the meantime. The last comparable hurricane to make landfall in Nicaragua was Felix, in 2007.
The storm is now on its way to Cuba and Florida.
