A standout lawsuit in the American film world: disappointed fans of Ana de Armas have filed a lawsuit because the actress was seen in a trailer of a movie, but not in the movie itself. They are demanding – on behalf of “all affected viewers” – at least $5 million in damages from film company Universal Pictures for raising false expectations.
The film yesterday from 2019 revolves around the concept that The Beatles have been wiped from collective memory. But to their disappointment, some viewers discovered that Ana de Armas had also disappeared from the film, even though they had seen her in the trailer.
The Cuban Ana de Armas is known for her roles in Bond film No Time To Die and the crime comedy Knives Out. Two aggrieved Americans, Conor Woulfe and Peter Michael Rosza, say they paid almost four dollars to have her in the film. yesterday only to find out that De Armas wasn’t in it at all.
The offending trailer (with Ana de Armas after about 2 minutes):
De Armas initially played a supporting role in director Danny Boyle’s film. As a guest on a talk show, she runs into main character Jack Malik (who is the only one who does remember the Beatles) on set. She was cut from the final cut because her role would distract too much from the main romance in the film. Screenwriter Richard Curtis experienced the procedure as “traumatic” because, according to him, De Armas played her role brilliantly.
The two fans who went to civil court mainly accuse Universal that De Armas was in the movie trailer, they say on entertainment news site Variety. According to them, the film company engaged in “misleading marketing” and used “the actress’s fame, charisma and brilliance” to promote a film she was not in. They further point out that yesterday has raised $150 million so far.
Universal Pictures has yet to comment, Variety reports.
