Many people do not know, but it is very bad to buy animals in a pet shop, the animals are weaker, get sick more quickly and there is at least a 90% chance that the animals come from a breeder. Where should you buy your animals? Read it all here.
Animals as products
Often a pet store does not care where the animals they sell come from, they remain products for them and they have to sell as much as possible (which is also one of the reasons that they sell several animals together like hamsters, while hamsters absolutely must be in a cage). Most pet stores therefore get their animals from brooders.
What are bread breeders
Many animals
Bread breeders are breeders with an enormous number of animals, for example a bread breeder who breeds in hamsters can have more than 1,000 animals. They live in small cages and because there are so many they are sold to pet shops for fairly low prices, which is why pet shops choose bread breeders.
Inbreeding
You often come across inbreeding with a bread breeder, a female animal that has become pregnant, for example, by a brother or the father. Due to inbreeding, the chance of all kinds of abnormalities is much greater and they also become ill more quickly, such as cancer. A bread breeder does not select healthy animals, he breeds with all animals, healthy or unhealthy, in order to sell as much as possible.
Not socialized
Farmers’ animals have not been socialized, often they have never been picked up and petted. This makes it very difficult to tame these animals, they are really just wild. Animals that come from a good breeder have received a lot of attention, and are therefore not as scary as animals from the breeding stock.
What can you do to stop bread breeders?
It is very difficult to stop bread breeders, all you can actually do is just stop buying animals from the pet store. No matter how pathetic the animals are, for every animal that is sold in the pet store, a new one is added from the breeding stock. The best thing about bread breeding is that pet stores are no longer allowed to sell animals, but unfortunately that will not happen any time soon.
Not all pet stores get their animals from farmers.
Some pet stores get their animals from good breeders, you can quickly find out by asking the pet store where the animal comes from. When you hear that they come from a breeder, you can always ask for the name of the breeder, so you can check whether they really come from a good breeder.
Advantage of good breeders
Well socialized
Good breeders often do not have multiple litters, so they have plenty of time for the young animals and they are well socialized. This means that they come into contact with all kinds of things so that they are not afraid of it later in life. You can lift, pet and cuddle these animals without biting or scaring you. You much prefer an animal.
Much fewer diseases
Breeders take a good look at an animal before they breed with it, as they want their young to be as healthy as possible. For example, if a mother animal has cancer, a breeder will not breed with it because the breeder does not want the young to get the disease. If there is nothing wrong with the mother animal and the young are sold, but it later turns out that there is a hereditary disease in the family, then a good breeder will remove the mother animal and the father animal from the breeding line and they will no longer be used for breeding.
Day care
What many people do not know is that there are all kinds of shelters, such as the hamster shelter, rat shelter, mouse shelter, rabbit and guinea pig shelter and much more. Here are animals that no longer have a home, if you are looking for an animal you could also look here, because then you give an animal a good, new home.
Finally
Think carefully before you take an animal, get well informed (preferably not in a pet store because of their wrong advice, see my other articles) on an online forum or at a vet. You can quickly get an animal from a pet store, but do realize that you stimulate breeding for bread. You can get good healthy animals from a shelter or from breeders, good luck with your choice!
