Digital security at colleges and universities must be improved. The Education Inspectorate concluded this in an investigation. The agency expects these findings to also apply to MBO, secondary schools and primary education.
“Just like other sectors, education has to get to work,” says inspector Ellen Jagtman. “That is necessary for the continuity of education, which is why education administrators should be concerned about this.”
Since the ransomware attack on Maastricht University, security has improved at many institutions, but not everywhere.
There are major differences between educational institutions: some institutions are well organized, but some school boards do not interfere much with ICT security. “But as a school administrator, you need to know what the risk is and what you can do about it,” says Jagtman.

The government should also do its part, according to the inspectorate. For example, the National Cyber Security Center could better share information with the educational institutions; that’s only partially happening.
The government could also help institutions to get their security in order. “All those educational institutions should not have to reinvent the wheel on their own every time.”
