Elton John is somewhat surprised by his fellow singer and protégé Ed Sheeran, who recently revealed on NPO Radio 2 that he is working on a Christmas record with the British singer.
“I was sworn to secrecy and then Sheeran goes with his big fucking mouth to the Netherlands,” says 74-year-old John jokingly, but with a serious undertone. He spoke to the British music magazine NME, in which he was confronted with the disclosure of Sheeran.
“It should indeed come out, but we’re not done yet. There is still work to be done,” John continued. He stressed that he cannot say more. “Because it’s with him.”
The interview in the morning show Jan-Willem Start Op on NPO Radio 2, in which Sheeran reveals the Christmas record with John:
At the beginning of this month, Sheeran talked his mouth out on Dutch radio, when a listener wanted to know whether he would like to make a Christmas record. At first he answered that question hesitantly, until after further questioning he announced the collaboration with John, with whom he has been in close contact for years.
According to Sheeran, Elton John called him on Christmas morning last year and suggested they make a Christmas record together. Sheeran said he didn’t really feel like a Christmas record would suit him.
But that changed in March, when a good friend of his died and he thought: “You don’t know if you’ll still be there tomorrow, everything can change just like that. Maybe I won’t be here tomorrow. Why not take this chance? said Sheeran.
