Facebook is temporarily banning political ads after polling stations in the US close on Nov. 3. The platform says it is doing that to avoid abuse or confusion after the US presidential election.
The social media platform will also label messages that prematurely declare a winner with information from authoritative news media and election officials. It states, for example, that not all votes have been counted yet.
Facebook has not specified a specific time period for the stop. Advertisers will be notified when the temporary hold is lifted.
Voting by post
Earlier, the social media platform announced that it would ban advertisements that question the outcome of the elections. According to the platform, these include advertisements labeling a particular voting method as fraudulent or corrupt, as well as using isolated cases of electoral fraud to undermine the outcome of the entire election.
Counting votes in the United States is expected to take several days this year. That’s because more Americans than ever before will be voting through the mail because of the corona epidemic.
