Graduated from Pabo but no job yet? More and more PABO students who have completed their education have great difficulty in finding a job. Due to cutbacks in education, families that are getting smaller and the fact that employees now have to work even until their 67th birthday, more and more teachers are finding themselves without a job. Some do find a job, but this is rarely for permanent work and increasingly as a part-time job. But has your education been in vain? Certainly not, there are still plenty of options to get started. In this article you can read about some of these options.
Substitute teacher
As in other sectors, you also have to deal with absenteeism in education. For a school it can be very difficult when a teacher cancels in the morning due to illness. Sometimes a school has a list of permanent substitutes that are available or they are members of a substitute pool. This has a large database of teachers who are on call to fill in for 1 day or longer. You will notice that you are registered as a substitute at several schools or a substitute pool that you are regularly at work. Especially in the winter when many people are sick, there is a lot of work for a substitute. The disadvantage of standing in is that you are not sure of work and therefore not of income.
Continue studying
If you haven’t gotten enough of learning yet, you could also learn further. There are various courses that fit well with your PABO diploma and also look good on your CV.
- Gym training
- Master Special Educational Needs (SEN)
In addition, you could choose to continue studying and not be in front of the class. Other courses related to your field:
- Pedagogy
- Child psychology
- Educational Psychology
Secondary Education
Although there is a shortage of jobs in primary education, jobs in secondary education are right there for the taking. If you graduated before 2006, you can teach students in practical education. If you want to teach at VMBO, HAVO or VWO, you can often start immediately, but you have to continue studying part-time.
Day-care
Another possibility is working in childcare. You can choose from a day nursery or an after school care (BSO). In this way you are still working and busy with children. The salary is only lower than if you are in the classroom.
And last but not least
Hopefully these solutions are only temporary. The expectations are that there will be a shortage of teachers in 2016. Hopefully the jobs will be there for the taking.
