New Year’s Eve is the big party with which we close the year. We look back on the events of the previous year and also look ahead; often in the form of good intentions. A popular and common good resolution is losing weight. Why not start right away with a recipe for sugar-free oliebollen and sugar-free apple turnovers?
The recipes
Below is explained in steps how you can make sugar-free oliebollen and sugar-free apple turnovers. First it is explained how sugar-free oliebollen are made. Then it is described how sugar-free apple turnovers can be made. The total preparation time for both recipes is approximately 30 minutes and it is very simple. Enjoy!
Before you start, you need the following ingredients for 6 to 8 oliebollen
- 1 bag of organic yeast
- 240 grams of almond milk (without added sugars)
- 240 grams of spelled flour
- 1.5 teaspoons lemon juice (squeeze yourself from a lemon or can be bought in a separate bottle)
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
- a pinch / little bit of salt
- coconut oil (to fry the oliebollen)
- and important for the sweet taste: 120 grams of currants and / or raisins
Method of preparation sugar-free oliebollen
- Weigh all of the above ingredients and set them out on the counter.
- Heat the almond milk in a pan until it feels lukewarm. Then add the yeast, cinnamon, lemon juice and a pinch of salt to the almond milk. A kind of paste is now forming.
- Move the flour into a bowl and mix the porridge from the pan through it. You can now add the raisins and / or currants. Stir through the paste so that all the currants spread well. The dough from the oliebol is now ready.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place for about an hour. Place a dry (washed) cloth on the oliebollen. You could just put this in the oven or microwave with it off. This way the oliebollen are in a protected place!
- After an hour we continue to fry the oliebollen. Heat the coconut oil to a temperature of 180 ° C.
- Take the dough out of the microwave / oven. Grab a little batter and create a ball of it. Once this is done, lower it into the coconut oil. Brown the oliebol for 2 to 3 minutes, then turn them over with a spoon or fork and fry for another 2 to 3 minutes.
7. Remove the oliebollen from the pan when the time has passed. Drain and cool the oliebollen. You can do this well on a piece of kitchen paper, which will collect some of the fat. Wait a little longer and the oliebollen are ready!
Variations on the oliebol with currants and raisins
Not enough of oliebollen yet? You could also make different oliebollen, so you have even more options to let your guests taste. For example, you can make an oliebol with pieces of dried fruit or an apple turnover with superfoods.
Variation 1: Oliebol or apple turnover with dried fruit
Replace the currants and raisins with dried cranberries or dried apricots. The rest of the recipe remains the same.
Variation 2: Superfood Oliebol or Apple Turnip
Replace the currants and raisins with superfood: eg goji berries and dried blueberries. The rest of the recipe remains the same.
Variation 3: The savory oliebol
You could of course also choose to make a tasty savory oliebol instead of an old-fashioned sweet oliebol.
Then these are the items from the recipe that you should replace:
- Replace the apples with red peppers.
- Replace the raisins with corn kernels. Use the same amount of grams.
- Replace the cinnamon with cilantro.

Would you like to add a little sweetness to the oliebol or apple turnover?
Most people throw icing sugar over the oliebol or apple turnover to make the oliebol taste even sweeter. Although we have not used sugar in the oliebol or apple turnover itself, and the raisins / currants provide a sweet taste, you could use powdered sugar to create a sweet taste on the oliebol or apple turnover. If you still go for a healthy alternative, you can also choose, for example, to buy sweetener powder and sprinkle it lightly over it. In addition, you could use a little bit of organic jam to give more flavor to your oliebol or apple turnover. Another tip is to sprinkle a little cocoa powder over the oliebol or apple turnover.
Happy New Year and good luck with the New Year’s resolutions!
