Is a meal salad always a meal salad?
You see them in every supermarket, the “meal salads”. You can hardly have it simpler and healthier and so the meal salads sell well. However, if you look closely at the packaged meal salads, you will see that they can hardly pass for a meal salad. By purchasing a few from different stores, you are able to form an opinion as to whether the meal salad actually does what the word says.
The purchased meal salads
The complete meal salads come from the large retail chains and can be compared in terms of best-before date and price. However, with all meal salads the ratio between the lettuce and the other ingredients was hard to find. The other ingredients looked more like garnishes than complete ingredients for the meal. The lettuce was diverse and varied from iceberg lettuce to arugula and the crunchiness was already somewhat off.
The other ingredients were limited in one case to a handful of pine nuts, a tablespoon of mayonnaise and 1 sherry tomato and in the other cases to about 40 grams of tuna, 4 sherry tomatoes and a vague dressing that had to pass as vinegrette.
The meal was consumed but as expected the meal salad turned out not to be a meal salad as you should be able to eat it without having to present all kinds of other dishes. The stomach cannot survive on the meal salads. Then take a critical look at what a home-made meal salad should look like to give substance to the word.
A homemade meal salad
A homemade meal salad has the advantage that you can also make unusual combinations, but just add what you like to the salad.
An example of how the salad can be composed:
- lettuce (to be filled in according to taste)
- 6 tomatoes (sherry tomatoes or vine tomatoes)
- 10 olives (green or black, but always without the stone)
- half a green pepper
- 2 tablespoons pearl onions
- dash of wine vinegar
- a few slices of pickle (salt / sour)
- 1 tablespoon of corn (small can)
- fish according to taste eg: tuna, shrimps, crayfish, eel
- tablespoon grated mature cheese or goat cheese
Of course you can also vary, but apart from the fish, the rest of the content is a matter of cleaning and possibly cutting it small. A meal that is easy to prepare, packed with vitamins and delicious. If you want to be a bit “naughty”, use it with a good glass of dry white wine.
