There are a number of documents that you must have in your car. The certificate of conformity, the insurance company, vehicle inspection certificate, inspection vignette and so on. When the police check your car, you can be fined if you do not have these documents in the car. In addition, it may ever come in handy. Especially when you are involved in an accident.
The insurance certificate
Every vehicle, be it a car or a motorcycle, must be insured against third parties. The driver can prove this by retrieving an international green insurance card issued by his insurance company. This document must always be within reach in the vehicle. This is for any police checks. Anyone who has a trailer must have this insured separately. This concerns a trailer with a GVW of more than 500 kg.
The vehicle registration certificate or registration certificate
A registration certificate must be present for every vehicle and trailer with a GVW of more than 750 kg. This is also mandatory. It proves that the vehicle is registered with the vehicle registration service. When the vehicle is sold, these papers are passed on to the buyer. The certificate of conformity is also passed on at the time of sale. Anyone who loses this document must immediately report it to the police. The necessary changes must also be made in the event of a change of residence.
The license plate
As you know, every vehicle has its own license plate. It concerns any vehicle with a GVW of more than 750 kg. A reproduction of the number plate must be affixed to the front of the car. Motors must be equipped with a yellow number plate. They must follow the same rules as the cars. This number plate is personal and is issued in the name of the person applying for the registration of the vehicle. This means that the license plate cannot be transferred to another person, and is therefore not passed on during the sale.
When selling the vehicle, the owner must return the registration plate to the vehicle registration service, if you do not buy another vehicle within 4 months. In case of loss or even theft of the number plate, one must immediately report it to the police. The number plate may not be covered, not even by a transparent fabric. It must always be visible for registration, for example a speed camera recording your speed. If it looks very dirty, it must be cleaned according to the law.
The inspection vignette
An inspection vignette states the period of validity of the inspection certificate for commercial vehicles. This vignette must be affixed to the right on the inside of the windscreen, or for trailers near the registration plate. It must always be clearly visible.
Not required, but useful
Something that is not mandatory, but very important when involved in a collision. Can you use a European collision form after a traffic accident? It is therefore always recommended to have this form with you.
