The NPO and broadcaster KRO-NCRV will stop with the youth series after fifteen years and more than 2500 episodes spangas† According to the makers, the viewing behavior of children has changed significantly in the past fifteen years. The last episode will air on April 28.
The series revolves around the experiences of ten students at a secondary school in the Netherlands. In the program much attention was paid to urgent themes such as bullying, poverty, mourning and lhbtiq+. The series has been awarded several times, including the Gouden Stuiver for the best program. Two films were also made around the series.
“It is important that children can mirror themselves to others and thus come into contact with topics that make them think,” says NPO manager Suzanne Kunzeler. “At the same time, we see that the viewing behavior of children has changed significantly over the past fifteen years, which is why we are now exploring different ways to create an up-to-date and socially involved children’s program.”
‘Icon of youth television’
Director Peter Kuipers of the KRO-NCRV speaks of an “icon of Dutch youth television”. “The series makes major and sometimes serious social topics accessible to the young viewer and also works as a conversation starter between parents and children. I am proud that we were able to inspire and entertain children for fifteen seasons with spangas†
