Omroep Zwart, Ongehoord Nederland, Omroep Groen, IslamOmroep and Omroep Stamppot. These are just a few of the thirteen new players who want to join the Dutch Public Broadcasting. They all think that the current eleven broadcasters do not properly represent part of society. What does it say about public broadcasting that so many groups feel left out?
In podcast De Dag, media expert Ron Vergouwen discusses, among others The Press Stand on NPO Radio 1, which aspiring broadcasters have the best chance. According to Vergouwen, you see a new form of compartmentalisation occurring and there seems to be a greater need for media that are primarily aimed at their own supporters. But how do you shape that in a workable and affordable way in the broadcasting system? The question is also whether it is desirable: does it not, as on social media, lead to polarized groups that only seek confirmation for their own ideas?
