The news spread around the world this weekend: thousands of companies worldwide have been attacked with ransomware and are being extorted to pay money. Never before have so many companies been shut down at the same time.
Cybersecurity expert Dave Maasland of IT security company ESET talks in podcast De Dag about the hacker group that is behind the attack and operates under the name REvil: a combination of the words ransomware and evil. According to him, this is a supremely powerful and wealthy criminal gang that will stop at nothing, can sabotage vital infrastructures and do anything for money. A kind of digital mafia.
Where do these hackers come from, how do they work and can they still be stopped?
