Volvo’s electric offshoot Polestar has published a first photo of the electric SUV “3” announced for 2022. Although the vehicle is wrapped in camouflage film, several details such as a front flattened towards the front and a side window strip that tapers sharply towards the rear can be seen. There are also powerfully exhibited wheelhouses at the rear. Overall, the SUV looks crisply proportioned.
Technically, the purely electrically powered Polestar 3 (near-series study. Vehicle is not yet for sale, homologation pending²) will share the platform with the sister model Volvo XC90, the third generation of which has been announced for the coming year, and together with the 3 Series in Volvo’s US plant Charleston / South Carolina is to roll off the assembly line. The Swedes refer to the Polestar 3 as a “Luxury Aero SUV”, which is supposed to compete against larger and more expensive SUV models such as the Porsche Cayenne or BMW iX. Polestar cites a target range of over 600 kilometers. In addition, the 3 Series should be able to drive highly automated on the autobahn.
Performance, prices, market launch
Polestar is still silent on further technical details or even prices. It can be assumed, however, that the power SUV will initially come onto the market with two electric motors, correspondingly with an electric all-wheel drive and up to 600 hp. In terms of price, Polestar 3 could still be above the currently most expensive XC90, which is available from at least 77,300 euros. A market launch is not expected before 2023.
