The US House of Representatives is likely to vote Tuesday or Wednesday on impeaching President Trump. So says James Clyburn, one of the most important Democrats in the House. Democrats want to start a case against Trump for inciting supporters who stormed the Capitol.
With only ten days until Joe Biden’s inauguration, it is a short day for impeachment proceedings to begin. The goal therefore seems not so much to impeach Trump, but to prevent him from making another shot at the presidency in 2024. Because that question is also voted on during impeachment.
If the House approves the procedure, the Senate must consider it. But if it is at the top of the Democratic Party, it will be delayed.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, wants to delay her getting into Joe Biden’s wheels, Clyburn said. Because otherwise the Senate would be preoccupied with the impeachment procedure around its inauguration and would no longer pay attention to the appointment of new cabinet members.
Clyburn suggests that the paperwork for impeachment, for example, does not go to the Senate until after a hundred days. “Let’s give the president-elect the 100 days he needs to get going,” he says.
Once the documents are in the Senate, a two-thirds majority is needed. The Democrats then need the support of at least 17 Republicans. The chance that this will succeed is considered small.
The vote on whether Trump can still run for president looks different. This requires a ‘simple’ majority of 51 votes in the Senate, which the Democrats have been looking forward to since last week.
Kill
The Capitol was stormed on Wednesday as politicians gathered to formally determine the result of the presidential election. President Trump had shortly before called protesters to go to the parliament building.
Five people were killed in the storm. For example, Trump supporter Ashli Babbit (35) was hit by a police bullet in the building when she tried to enter a high-security part of parliament. Three people died after “medical emergencies” such as a heart attack.
42-year-old officer Brian Sicknick was also killed. According to police, he was hit on the head with a fire extinguisher during the storm and suffered fatal brain damage. The FBI is investigating his death.
In the meantime, the international research collective Bellingcat is calling to investigate images showing an agent being dragged and attacked from the steps of the Capitol. Whether this is Agent Sicknick is unknown.
Circulate on social media shocking images of an agent being attacked, which agent it is has not yet been confirmed.
Police announced this afternoon that a 51-year-old officer who worked for the Capitol has also died. According to American media, he took his own life yesterday. It is not known whether his death has to do with the assault.
