One of the advantages of wooden floors is that they can easily be renovated so that they look like new again. For the renovation of an expensive solid parquet, it is best to call on a specialized company. You can easily give old wooden floors in bedrooms yourself a makeover. Hereby follows a working method to complete this job successfully.
Preparation
Start by sealing any seams between the boards. You can fill small seams with malleable wood, this can be found in most DIY stores. For larger gaps, use wedge-shaped planed slats. Next, you will remove all splinters and remove any staples or nails from any previous floor covering. Nail heads are driven about 3 mm below the surface of the wood with the help of a punch. Damaged or excessively worn planks should of course be replaced by new planks.
Rent a sander
You need special floor sanders for sanding. For the largest surface of the floor you need a parquet sander. You can use a belt sander or a special edge sander for the corners and edges of the floor. All of these devices can be rented from almost any rental company.
Sanding
Sanding a wooden floor is done in 3 or 4 stages, each time with a finer sandpaper. If you still have to remove old paint or glue or the floor is very uneven, first use extra coarse sandpaper with a grain thickness between 16 and 20. In the other case you can immediately start with normal coarse sandpaper with a grain thickness between 36 and 50. Then you are going to sand with a grit of 60 to 80. Extra fine sandpaper (grit 100 to 120) is intended to obtain a perfectly smooth surface. Be careful because you always sand wood in the direction of the wood grain, except when the floor is in bad condition. In that case you sand diagonally the first time and only then parallel to the floor parts. However, do not forget to vacuum thoroughly between 2 sanding sessions.
Finish off
If the floor has been sanded, is even and smooth, you can start finishing. The floor can be lacquered, waxed, oiled or bleached. The choice is entirely yours. The easiest to maintain is parquet that has been lacquered.
