Twitter and Facebook are taking steps to prevent a message from The New York Post tabloid about Joe Biden and his son Hunter from spreading quickly. The paper claims to have received emails suggesting that Joe Biden was meeting with a partner of the gas company Hunter worked for in 2015, while he was vice president.
The New York Post links the alleged meeting to Joe Biden’s pressure less than a year later on the Ukrainian government to dismiss the country’s highest prosecutor. That prosecutor wanted to investigate corruption at Burisma Holdings, the company Hunter Biden worked for.
According to Twitter, the message offers too little insight into the origin of the material. The company further points out that it does not want to cooperate in the dissemination of information obtained through hacking that contains private data. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey acknowledged that his company initially gave too little explanation for the decision:
Facebook has therefore intervened for similar reasons to prevent the piece from quickly gaining wider attention.
Biden firmly denies
The New York Post claims to have received a copy of a laptop hard drive. The copy was made by a computer shop owner where the laptop would have been returned in April 2019. The owner would have taken the material to the FBI himself, but reportedly made the copy first. It would have ended up at the New York Post through Trump’s adviser Rudy Giuliani.
Democratic presidential candidate Biden’s campaign has responded to the reporting and strongly contradicts it. According to Biden, the meeting the tabloid writes about never happened. That there was no abuse of power has been shown in media investigations, the impeachment investigation into Trump and investigations by Senate committees, Biden said.
Correspondent Lucas Waagmeester calls the proactive attitude of the tech companies striking. “So they do not want to act as a conduit for an unproven story, while that often enough does happen. At the same time, serious American media today made the same choice; they also did not publish the story from the New York Post, which has a not too credible reputation. has.”
Bidens opponent Trump, on Twitter, lashes out at both Twitter and Facebook. He calls it terrible that the companies are preventing the spread of the message. According to the president, the emails are convincing evidence of corruption and abuse of power. “He has always been a corrupt politician. Shameful!” Trump writes about Biden.
