Thailand banned the use of hydrogenated fats (trans fat) yesterday. Trans fats are very bad for your health. Thailand is now the first country in Asen to ban the production, import and sale of hydrogenated fats and oil.
Hydrogenated fats arise when vegetable oil is hydrogenated. Hydrogenation is a process in which unsaturated bonds are converted to saturated bonds by adding hydrogen gas. This artificial intervention makes the vegetable fats long-lasting. For example, vegetable liquid oil is converted into non-liquid solid fat (saturated fat).
Trans fats have been used since the 1950s to prepare, among other things, fast food. They are found in our food and can lead to health problems such as cardiovascular disease, obesity and increased cholesterol.
The WHO has praised Thailand for the ban and the procedure followed, said Health Minister Piyasakol. The WHO also appreciates the information campaigns conducted.
