The akita is a dog that needs time and space. He likes to be around his people, needs a lot of exercise and likes to be kept busy so that he can use his great intelligence. If his perhaps somewhat dominant character is taken into account, he is a great dog for the right owner.
General
The akita is a large dog, with males reaching a height of 67 cm at the withers and bitches growing to about 61 cm in height, allowing three cm higher or lower. He belongs to the Asian Keeshond. Its body is well-proportioned, powerful, compact and muscular. It weighs about 45 kg. The akita is very robust and strong. Its waterproof coat consists of a top coat and an undercoat. The top layer is hard and coarse, the bottom layer is soft and dense. They are usually light to reddish brown or brindle in color, but other colors are also possible. A black mask is not allowed. These dogs shed twice a year, but they need regular brushing throughout the year. Its ears are erect and tilted slightly towards the oven and the curly tail is carried over the back. The akita lives on average 10-12 years old.
Origin
This breed is native to Japan, but its exact parentage is controversial. There are already indications of this breed from the second century, making the akita one of the oldest breeds. It has therefore been an integral part of Japanese culture for a long time. This dog was used in bear hunting and as a combat dog. Today these dogs are kept as pets all over the world.
Character
The akita is a very willful breed with a distinctive drive. He will not let himself be forced into anything, but once you have gained his trust, he is a protector for life. He is very loyal and friendly to children. He can be quite suspicious of strangers and dogs. The akita is not a beginner dog. His owner must know exactly when the dog is showing dominance and be able to deal with it. The akita is not always friendly to other dogs and does not shy away from a fight. He usually won’t start, rather he is reluctant and suspicious. But when challenged, he certainly won’t let himself eat the cheese off the bread. His great hunting and protection drive also needs attention.
Its fearless, unflappable nature makes the akita a very trustworthy dog when properly trained and socialized. He is relaxed, friendly, and has a steadfast and patient character, making him a great fit for a family. However, he must be well socialized from a young age and it must be taken into account that he will not always accept strange children. He does need a clear boss, because he has a strong personality and is quite stubborn. When not properly educated, he will try to move up the rankings and try the limits.
Movement
The large, strong Akita needs to be able to move around every day so that it can remain friendly and cheerful. When not challenged enough, he can become bored and destructive. He is suitable for dog sports, but keep in mind that he is very independent and headstrong. The akita is also a good sled dog and with the right training it can be used as a therapy, watch or detection dog. Do you want it a bit simpler; this dog also really enjoys taking long walks or running next to the bike.
