The finishing touches: text editing
Would you like to adjust this piece? Then it can still go straight away! ?? Editors often have to deal with a high workload. With a deadline ahead, they are the last to run through a text. They improve misplaced d ?? s and t ?? s and dot the i’s. A good headline and the article can go to the press. But is the text actually ready?
Only after publication, when the stress has subsided, do a number of important points appear to be overlooked. The paragraphs are not well structured, the intro does not convey the meaning of the text or the structure is unclear. Precisely these are important factors that contribute to the quality of an article. Despite the short timeframe, it is therefore important to look at an article with a critical eye before you send it out. But what exactly should you pay attention to and where do you start?
Spelling mistakes are obvious, which is why it is important that the editor removes them. There are several general spelling issues that you often encounter in practice. For example, when editing, pay close attention to references like ?? die ?? and that?? or what?? and that??. Incorrect combinations or loan words, the wrong verb order or incorrect abbreviations are also common.
Punctuation marks and sentence structure
In addition to spelling, the punctuation marks and sentence structure of a text must also be correct. For example, check whether unnecessary commas are used and whether there are quotes where necessary. Variation in sentence structure plays a major role in the appeal of a text. Therefore, check that the length of the sentences and the sequence of the phrases are sufficiently varied.
The structure largely determines the readability of an article. Therefore, check whether the title, first sentences and subheadings clearly indicate what the text is about. Also pay attention to the division of the text in paragraphs. Does a new paragraph start with a new topic and is the content briefly summarized in the last paragraph? Furthermore, sufficient use must be made of signal words. Also pay attention to keywords that are important in terms of content and contribute to the comprehensibility of a text.
So there are several points that need to be considered in editorial work. Therefore, first read the relevant text to take in the content. Then just try out for yourself how you work most effectively. One prefers to start with adding structure, while the other gets stuffy if not all spelling mistakes are removed first. Most importantly, take your time.
