Everyone has to deal with it in the summer. Just as one falls asleep a buzzing noise or worse, waking up in the morning with some itchy bumps. Summer is coming again and so mosquitoes are entering our lives again. In addition, there is a new, even more annoying mosquito that can occur in the Netherlands, the Tijgermug.
Features Tiger mosquito
The tiger mosquito, Latin name Aedes albopictus (see below for more information), is native to Asia. But due to the increasing transports to and from Asia, this tiger mosquito can also occur in Europe. He has already been spotted in the Netherlands. The tiger mosquito has also been spotted in other European countries and America. The tiger mosquito is mainly distributed in the transport of so-called Lucky Bamboo cuttings and plants, which are further cultivated in greenhouses in the Netherlands, for example. These greenhouses are of course an ideal living environment for the tiger mosquito. Due to climate change and rising temperatures, the tiger mosquito can also survive outside the greenhouses in the Netherlands.

Stabbing
The tiger mosquito bites both animals and humans, they do this several times to suck up blood. In contrast to the mosquitoes that we are used to in the Netherlands, these tiger mosquitoes are also much more active, even during the day, for example. Only the female tiger mosquito bites, these stings are more painful than those of a “normal” mosquito and cause a red-purple like bump. In addition, an infected tiger mosquito can also transmit contagious diseases to its offspring. There is also a danger in this, an infected (female) tiger mosquito can transmit a number of contagious diseases with its sting. Below is an overview of some of these diseases:
- West Nile Disease
- Japanese encephalitis
- Chikungunya
- Dengue
- Yellow fever
- Dengue fever
Fever and diarrhea, for example, are symptoms that can occur with these diseases, but these diseases can certainly be dangerous in older people and people with a weak constitution. But in principle these diseases are not life-threatening.
Appearance
In the Netherlands, various measures are taken to prevent the spread of the tiger mosquito. This mainly concerns the importers of the Lucky Bamboo plants in the Netherlands. For the time being this is having a good effect, but the future will show whether this will last. It could also happen, for example, that the tiger mosquito spread via other ways than via the Lucky bamboo plants or that they end up in the Netherlands via one of our neighboring countries.
