Your child’s birthday is a special day, at school your child is the center of attention and may even treat it. But with so many children in the classroom, it can be difficult to come up with an original treat. With a cupcake as a base you are in the right place in terms of taste and with the tips below for the garnish, the treat will certainly be a success.
The base, cupcakes
As a basis for the treat you can make cupcakes. Cupcakes are easy to make, you can follow the recipe below, or buy a pack of ready-made cupcakes mix from the supermarket and follow the directions on the pack if you want to make it easy on yourself.
Tip! The paper holders that hold the cupcakes are available in various cheerful colors.
Ingredients
For 12 cupcakes
- 125 gr butter
- 125 gr granulated sugar
- 125 gr self-raising flour
- 2 tbsp milk
- 2 eggs
Preparation
Preheat the oven to 170 degrees. The rack should be placed in the center of the oven. Let the butter come to room temperature and cut it into pieces in a bowl. Always add a little sugar and mix with the mixer. When you have mixed all the butter and sugar, add the eggs one by one. Finally add the self-raising flour and mix well until a smooth, airy mass is formed. Scoop the batter into the cupcake cases with a spoon. The mold should be about 2/3 full. Bake the cupcakes in the oven for 20-25 minutes. You can check if they are good by poking them with a skewer. If no more wet batter sticks to the skewer, your cupcakes are good. When the cupcakes have cooled you can start decorating.
Basic recipe of glaze
You can use frosting on the cupcakes as a topping and to stick the decoration. At the supermarket you can also buy ready-made packages of icing that you only have to make with water. However, you can also make frosting yourself.
Tip! Do you want to give your homemade glaze a nice color? Then use food coloring, available at most food stores.
Ingredients
- 150 gr icing sugar
- 4 tbsp water
- Possibly. pigment
Preparation
Put the icing sugar in a bowl, add the water spoon by spoon and stir continuously. You may need less than 4 tablespoons of water. This depends on the thickness you want for your glaze. Finally add a few drops of food coloring and stir again. Spread the icing over the cupcakes with the back of a spoon.
Spiders
Ingredients
- Chocolate sprinkles
- Licorice laces
- Smarties
Preparation
Cut the licorice laces into eight equal pieces, these are the legs of your spider. Press the end of the liquorice laces into the still wet icing, so that the liquorice laces hang down the cupcake shape. Sprinkle the still wet icing with chocolate sprinkles. In front of the spider’s eyes, push two smarties into the icing. Who is still afraid of such a nice spider?
Hedgehogs
Ingredients
- Chocolate sprinkles
- Small skewers
- different fruits
- Smarties
Preparation
Sprinkle the wet icing with chocolate sprinkles. Press two smarties into the icing of each cupcake as eyes. Thread different types of fruit on short skewers, for example a grape, a piece of apple and a slice of banana. If you like it, you can also thread a poffertje and a piece of fruit on the skewers instead of just fruit. Stick about four skewers in each cake. Watch out, sting hedgehogs.
Ladybugs
Ingredients
- 1 packet of red fondant or marzipan
- 1 packet of white fondant or marzipan
- 1 packet of black fondant or marzipan
Preparation
For these ladybugs it does not matter whether you use fondant or marzipan, you can choose what you like best. Personally, I always choose fondant, because I like it better and it is less sticky, which makes it easier to roll out.
Start by rolling out the red fondant. Do this on a clean counter with a rolling pin. If the fondant sticks to the counter or your roller, you can sprinkle a little icing sugar on the counter and the roller. If you have rolled a thin slice, cut out as many rounds as you have with a round cookie cutter. Place a red circle on the wet icing of each cupcake. Also roll the black fondant into a thin slice. You need less of this than the red fondant. Now cut small circles out of it, which will serve as the dots on the beast’s back. The apple corer is a great tool for this. Then cut out a thin line with a knife, which you place over the center of the red circle. Also stick the dots on the cakes. Use an apple corer from the white fondant to press two circles for the eyes. Knead small pieces of black fondant into small rolls and stick them in the white circles, these are the puppets of the ladybugs.
