The head of the Election Crimes Department of the United States Department of Justice is stepping down immediately. His departure, according to US media, is the result of an internal call by Justice Secretary William Barr to investigate “substantial allegations” of electoral fraud.
“Now that I know what the new policy is and what its consequences are, I unfortunately have to resign as director of the Election Crimes Industry,” said Richard Pilger’s statement. He forwarded the letter with his decision to colleagues, including Barr’s memo.
No examples
Election fraud has been a fraught topic since Joe Biden was declared the winner of the presidential election on Saturday. Donald Trump and his campaign team have repeatedly claimed that there was widespread fraud with votes and counting, but no evidence has been provided for those claims.
In the memo, Barr, a loyal ally of the president, does not state that tampering has actually taken place. Nor does he mention any examples of potentially suspicious situations. He does, however, urge his officials to get to the bottom of things about “serious allegations of electoral fraud”, for example by interviewing witnesses.
