The American regulator of medicines (FDA) recommends that the corona vaccine of the Leiden pharmaceutical company Janssen be allowed on the American market. This means that millions of people can be vaccinated in the short term.
A few days ago, the FDA had already said the vaccine is safe and about 72 percent effective.
Janssen’s American owner, Johnson & Johnson, has already started distributing four million vaccines. It is planned that 20 million people will be vaccinated in a month and 100 million by the end of June.
The Janssen vaccine can be kept in a normal refrigerator and, unlike the vaccines from other manufacturers, one shot is enough.
Also fast approval in EU
President Biden is happy with the FDA approval, but he warns against too much optimism. “This is exciting news for all Americans and an encouraging development in our efforts to overcome the crisis. But we must remain vigilant,” said a statement.
It is also expected that the vaccine can be administered quickly in the European Union. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) will approve Janssen’s corona vaccine on March 11, EU sources have told Bloomberg news agency.
