What is a floppy chicken?
When buying chicken meat, consumers are urged to look beyond price alone. More focus should be placed on animal welfare.
As the name suggests, these are chickens from the meat-producing factory farming industry. The chickens have been bred to achieve the lowest possible cost price, so that the chickens can end up cheaply in the supermarket freezer. As a consumer, we often choose the cheapest product, so we buy floppy chickens instead of the much more expensive organic chickens. As long as the chickens are sold well, their production will continue. We can provide better conditions for the chickens destined for slaughter.
What is a floppy chicken?
These chickens are pumped in a period of six weeks from a chick of 50 grams to a chicken of more than two kilos. This process is done in an inhumane manner and is fully aimed at the highest possible turnover. Due to the too rapid growth, the chicken develops health problems. The lungs and heart cannot keep up with the rapid growth and are left behind in the growth process, with all the consequences that entails. They have to live with twenty hens or chicks on one square meter. They develop painful sores on their paws from walking in their own feces. In short, the conditions are unreasonably bad. After six weeks they are transported to the slaughterhouse.
Floppy chicken is also worse for human health
Chicken meat is healthier compared to most other meats. Chicken meat is particularly popular because it contains little fat and is therefore healthier. The organic chicken is healthier compared to the floppy chicken. The necessary hormones and antibiotics are used to shorten the growth process. By eating these chickens, you also get these substances into your body. This will not immediately pose health risks, but the organic chicken will be healthier.
Prefer to pay a little more
At the beginning of 2013, the Wakker Dier Foundation was able to draw the necessary attention to the welfare of the chickens in the chicken industry. The consumer appears to be willing to pay a little more for chicken meat, but they should be pointed out that the floppy chicken should not be bought. By using advertisements, the foundation has been able to encourage the consumer not to pay for the? to go. In the commercials they also mentioned the names of supermarkets that still sell chickens. The Wakker Dier Foundation has therefore put pressure on retailers to make improvements to their purchasing policy.
How do you recognize chicken meat that does not fall under the definition of floppy chicken?
You cannot tell from the meat to what extent it concerns a floppy chicken. Animal protection has set up an assessment to recognize meat that takes into account the welfare of the animals. This so-called Beter Leven Feature has a rating of one to three stars. You will find three stars on organic products. Two stars means that it does not yet meet the description organic, but the welfare of the animals has certainly been taken into account. One star is used for the usual treatment in the industry. There will be no rating on the packaging of the floppy chicken. In the absence of such a sticker, you must realize that it may be a floppy chicken.
