The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is less than three months old, so Daimler is introducing the next level of escalation in terms of luxury. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. Two-tone paintwork, an extended wheelbase, a lot of digitization and at least 489 hp are the cornerstones of the largest and most expensive special class from Sindelfingen (vehicle is not yet for sale, homologation pending²).
Eight-cylinder with additional number
First of all, contrary to what was expected, the showpiece does without a twelve-cylinder. The eight-cylinder mentioned so far comes from the regular product portfolio of Mercedes-Benz and is also offered in the current S-Class. Daimler mentions the number 580 as a nickname, although this does not provide any information about the power or the torque.
The drive moves into the background
In view of the future plans that Daimler wants to have its internal combustion engines manufactured by Geely in China, the press release also refrained from further details about the drive. One thing is clear: It is a mild hybrid eight-cylinder with just those 489 hp and 700 Newton meters of torque. An integrated starter generator boosts the engine output with 15 kW and is integrated in the 9-speed automatic transmission.
Long S-Class extended again
There is currently nothing more to know about the engine and Ola Källenius, CEO of Daimler AG, prefers to refer to the inimitable luxury of the new Mercedes Maybach S-Class at the official presentation. The Maybach has been extended by 18 centimeters compared to the “regular” long version of the S-Class to a total of 5.47 meters.
Maybach S-Class: Safe and quiet
Up to 18 airbags protect the occupants, which can be illuminated by 253 LEDs in the vehicle interior. An active noise suppression function via the Burmester high-end 4D surround system keeps unpleasant road noises away from the passenger. Since the Maybach S-Class is primarily used as a chauffeur vehicle in countries such as Russia, China, the USA and Germany, the rear seats can be adjusted extensively. From a lying position to a sitting position, everything is possible.
Belt feeder and cooling compartment
So that the illustrious customers in the rear do not twist their arms when putting on the seat belt, there is the seat belt feeder familiar from the S-Class Coupé and Cabrio for the first time. Sparkling wine (and other drinks) can be cooled down between +1 and +7 degrees Celsius in the optional cooling compartment. The Clos D ‘Ambonnay 2000 pitcher should indeed be well chilled before looking at the price list.
Expensive pleasure as usual
150,000 euros for the basic version must be ready on the high edge, whereby the equipment list of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class should have further, sinfully expensive, extras. Depending on the market, there is a choice of illuminated exterior logos, electric rear doors can make getting in and out easier and, of course, the interior can be customized as you wish. There is also no question that the Maybach S-Class has the current MBUX operating system, numerous assistance systems and online functions.
Market start in Germany
Mercedes wants to start selling the Maybach S-Class in Germany in spring 2021, the other world markets will be served a little later. Whether a twelve-cylinder will come in the end is currently open.
Length is known to run. With the long Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, Daimler is once again defining a new luxury standard within the group. The opponents are clearly defined: Rolls-Royce and Bentley. In contrast to the English brands (under German management), however, the drive is moving out of focus. It is unclear whether a twelve-cylinder will be submitted, the inclined customers (especially in China) now seem to care. (Text: Thomas Vogelhuber | Pictures: Manufacturer)
