Fraudster arrested for selling insurance to monk, confesses to theft

The Royal Thai Police arrested a former insurance agent for defrauding an abbott by selling a life insurance policy intended for his mother. The suspect confessed to using the premium money for personal expenses rather than submitting it to the insurance company.

On October 12, 2024, the Central Investigation Bureau, under the direction of Police Lieutenant General Jirapat Puridej, arrested 34-year-old Wannaa Pengjamrat in Songkhla after the Thungsong Court issued an arrest warrant for fraud.

The incident occurred on April 3, 2024, when Wannaa allegedly tricked the abbott of a temple in Nakhon Si Thammarat into purchasing a serious illness life insurance policy. She presented herself as a representative of a major insurance company and offered a 5-year policy costing 115,560 THB yearly, meant to cover the abbott’s mother until her 90th birthday. The abbott agreed and paid the premium in cash on the spot. The transaction was recorded on audio.

After the abbott’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and filed a claim, the insurance company denied any record of the policy. On June 11, 2024, the insurance company’s manager informed the abbott that Wannaa had been terminated as an agent on April 17, 2024, and had pocketed the payment without forwarding it to the company.

Consequently, the abbott reported Wannaa to the Thung Yai Police Station for fraud. Following an investigation, police tracked her to a rental house in Songkhla and arrested her while she was inside.

During interrogation, Wannaa admitted to selling the policy while still an insurance agent but confessed to misusing the funds. She expressed an awareness that her arrest was imminent and accepted responsibility for her actions.

After her arrest, police transferred Wannaa to the Thung Yai Police for further legal action.
