Severe flooding has hit Lampang Province, particularly in Hang Chat District, where water levels exceed one meter in some areas. Local officials warn residents near the Wang River to move belongings to higher ground.
On September 24, 2024, reporters observed water levels at around 60 centimeters along the Hang Chat-Koh Ka road near Wat Ban Jam Sai Mool, with heavy water flow making it unsafe for smaller vehicles. In certain alleyways, water levels reached nearly one meter.
A local resident, 68-year-old Bumpen Punkaew, reported that floodwaters reached her waist and her livestock, including ducks and chickens, had been swept away. Additionally, her rice fields had been submerged for several days.
61-year-old Niyom Punma from alleyway 5 also reported severe flooding but has been assisting neighbors by transporting them in his tractor for free, as many have been affected and struggle to travel to work or school. He noted this flooding is one of the worst in 20 years, lasting longer than previous instances.
Additionally, a community center in the area is being used by a humanitarian foundation to provide meals for affected residents.
Residents near the Wang River are facing increasing water levels due to continuous rainfall and the release of water from nearby dams. The discharge rates are currently at 220 cubic meters per second from one dam and 174 cubic meters per second from another, exacerbating the flooding situation.
Lampang city officials urge residents to safeguard their belongings and vehicles. They continue to monitor the situation as rain persists, while some locals exploit the flooded areas for fishing.
