Kiew Lom and Kiew Khom Dam increase water discharge, affecting areas

The Department of Water Resources has alerted citizens to prepare as the Kiang Lom and Kiang Khoma dams are increasing water discharge due to heavy rainfall in Lampang Province, causing flooding in some areas. They are closely monitoring the situation.

Intense rainfall has led to heavy runoff into the Kiang Khoma dam, reaching maximum capacity, necessitating a release of water into the Wang River, which will subsequently flow into the Kiang Lom dam.

As of September 25, 2024, the Kiang Khoma dam is discharging approximately 255 cubic meters per second, while the Kiang Lom dam is at about 322 cubic meters per second. This increased discharge will affect the following areas:

  • Ban Boon Nak Phatthana, Moo 1, Buon Nak Phatthana Sub-district, Mueang Lampang District.
  • Low-lying areas within Lampang Municipal District, Mueang Lampang District.
  • Roads alongside the Wang River, anticipated to see water levels rise by 70-85 centimeters from their current state.

Furthermore, this water discharge will impact low-lying areas on both banks downstream of the Kiang Lom dam as well, particularly if additional rainfall occurs in the vicinity.

The Department of Water Resources has coordinated with Lampang Province and relevant agencies to notify residents in at-risk areas to move valuables to higher ground and monitor the situation closely. They will provide ongoing updates should there be any changes in water discharge plans. The department also confirmed that both dams remain stable and safe for water management operations.
