Tragedy struck when a 64-year-old woman was killed by an American pit bull named “Poykai.” The dog will now be neutered and relocated to a new home in Nakhon Pathom.
On September 25, 2024, it was reported that Ms. Daeng Thamthantha, aged 64, was mauled to death by the pit bull. The dog’s owner expressed that the animal had only recently started showing aggression and could no longer care for it, requesting assistance from authorities.
The victim’s family received her body at the Pathum Thani Forensic Institute, stating they held no grudge as the two families were related. The funeral will take place at Wat Klong Khud over three nights, culminating in cremation on September 28, 2024.
At 2:00 PM, Peerapoon Charoenwai, president of The Hope Thailand animal welfare organization, met with the dog’s owner, Ms. Kiattikarn, and discussed taking the dog for proper care. The plan includes behavior modification and neutering to reduce aggressive tendencies. Ms. Kiattikarn can visit Poykai at any time, but moving the dog will take one to two days.
Peerapoon expressed sympathy for the situation and mentioned they would find a suitable home for Poykai with someone knowledgeable about pit bulls. The chosen location would ensure the dog has space and freedom, preventing it from mixing with other breeds.
Prior discussions indicated cooperation with a dog trainer to assist with behavior training in Suphanburi before transferring the dog to its new home.
Peerapoon emphasized the need for stricter laws regarding dog ownership and registration to prevent incidents like this. He noted that aggression can vary between individual dogs, influenced by upbringing, and pointed out that the attack may have stemmed from Poykai’s unneutered state, which can lead to dominant behavior.
He concluded that the lack of spaying/neutering likely contributed to the incident, along with insufficient protection measures from the owner, such as lacking a secure fence, which allowed the dog to chase after vehicles.
