Night Bazaar vendor laments rapid flooding, rushes to elevate goods

Night bazaar traders in Chiang Mai are expressing concern as “the water rose very quickly”, flooding the economic intersection of the city. They are hastening to move their goods to higher ground and request to close shops until the situation improves.

As of 8:00 PM on September 25, 2024, reports indicate that the Ping River’s water level continues to rise, predicted to exceed 5 meters, marking a historical crisis point. Military personnel from Squadron 41 are assisting residents in sandbagging to prevent overflow under the bridge in the Muang District of Chiang Mai.

At the same time, the area around Chang Klan Road leading to the economic intersection in the bazaar has been rapidly inundated, with water levels making it impossible for small vehicles to pass. Only military vehicles can navigate the area to assist residents seeking help.

Traders in the night bazaar reported that while they were prepared for rising water levels, the speed of the inundation was unexpected. They managed to secure most of their items, but some, like steel racks for hanging clothes, could not be moved in time due to the sudden influx of water.

However, some vendors successfully transported their beloved pets to higher ground and relocated to relatives’ homes in unaffected areas. Many shops in the night bazaar have decided to close until flooding conditions improve.
