Severe flooding in Lampang province, particularly in the low-lying areas of Sop Prap sub-district, has affected over 170 households.
The flooding was caused by heavy rainfall combined with high water levels in two major dams, the Kiew Kho Mah dam and the Kiew Lom dam. The Kiew Kho Mah dam, at full capacity of 170 million cubic meters, started releasing water into the Wang River at a rate of 260 cubic meters per second to prevent overflow, leading to rising water levels affecting residents in low-lying areas.
On September 26, 2024, reporters visited Sop Prap sub-district and found significant flooding in low areas near the Wang River, making rescue efforts necessary as some residents had to swim to their homes due to rising water levels.
According to the local chief, Mit Phanom Suphan, the floodwaters have submerged homes for three days, with water levels varying from ankle-deep to neck-deep in low-lying areas. If more rain falls, levels could rise an additional meter, although residents have prepared for potential flooding.
The floodwaters have also reached districts beyond Sop Prap, affecting homes along the riverbanks in Huai Thung and Mae Prik districts.
