The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has issued a warning for 10 provinces in the Central Region and Bangkok to monitor rising water levels in the Chao Phraya River starting from September 28, 2024.
On September 26, 2024, at 11:45 AM, the Ministry of Interior’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation coordinated with the provinces of Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan, as well as Bangkok, to prepare for the increasing water levels.
The department has deployed personnel to closely monitor water conditions, particularly in low-lying areas, and has communicated warnings to residents along the riverbanks about potential flooding risks. Local authorities and related agencies have been asked to check the integrity of flood barriers and prepare emergency response equipment.
The Director-General of the Department, Chaiwat Junthiraphong, reported that recent rain from strong monsoons and low-pressure systems has caused significant rainfall in several regions, especially the North and Northeast. Predictions indicate an inflow of approximately 2,000 to 2,100 cubic meters per second at the Chao Phraya River’s monitoring station in Nakhon Sawan on September 28, 2024, which could lead to an increase in river levels by 1.00 to 1.50 meters in low-lying communities.
The Central Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command has coordinated with the same ten provinces to closely monitor water levels, particularly in vulnerable areas. Authorities will continue to warn construction businesses, restaurants, and passengers using piers along the river, and advise residents to prepare for possible evacuations of belongings.
Furthermore, local governance and related agencies are urged to fortify flood prevention measures and prepare disaster response equipment for 24/7 readiness to assist affected communities.
