The national day of action of Giro555 for victims of the war in Ukraine has ended with a final score of more than 106 million euros. That was announced in the TV program Together in action for Ukraine, a broadcast that could be seen simultaneously on NPO 1, RTL 4 and SBS 6.
This is a provisional amount. It is expected to increase in the coming days.
Giro 555, an initiative of eleven aid organizations, started the campaign for Ukraine last Monday. The proceeds are for shelter, medical care and clean drinking water for affected Ukrainians.
Until today, 21.4 million euros had already been collected. Around noon, that amount had risen to more than 29.5 million euros and at the beginning of the evening the standings were 40.9 million. So tens of millions of euros were added.
15 million from cabinet
In the television broadcast, Minister Schreinemacher (Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation) announced that the cabinet is allocating another 15 million euros for emergency aid to Ukraine. This is in addition to the 24.5 million euros that was already promised.
The promotion for Ukraine is now Giro555’s third most successful fundraiser. The action for victims of the tsunami in Asia in 2004 yielded the most: 208 million euros. After the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, €111 million was collected.
Proceeds of advertising also go to charity
Radio555 ran on ten radio stations and on social media between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. DJs from the collaborating radio stations played songs that people could request in exchange for a donation. The proceeds from the commercial breaks also went to Giro555.
This is how the kick-off of the action day sounded on Radio555:
Those who wanted to donate could do so via the website or by calling a special telephone number. In the national action center, in Sound and Vision in Hilversum, Dutch celebrities, among others, were ready to listen to the callers.
Actions for Ukraine have been rigged across the country in recent days, such as with this garden seed seller:
