How do you make a roller blind yourself?
Making and hanging a roller blind consists of just 5 steps. If you stick to the sequence in the step-by-step plan, you can easily make and hang a roller blind yourself. The step-by-step plan for making a roller blind consists of the following parts:
- determine the location
- choose a roller blind
- shorten the blind
- cut the curtain fabric to size
- hang up the roller blind
Determine the location
If you know at which window you want to hang a roller blind, you have to make a choice in the placement. You can hang a roller blind on the frame or inside the frame. The choice depends on, among other things, the location of the window closures. Therefore, make sure there are no obstacles in the way when the roller blind is installed.
You determine the dimensions by measuring the width of the frame. For placement on the frame, measure between the two outer edges of the frame. For placement within the frame, measure between the two inner edges of the frame. The size includes the roller blind suspension system.
Don’t forget to measure the height as well. Roller blinds are available in different lengths.
Choosing a roller blind

Shorten the roller blind
To shorten a roller blind you need tools: a hacksaw, scissors and a tape measure or a folding rule. You can shorten the aluminum roll by sawing off a piece with the hacksaw. Measure the sizes well in advance. If you place the roller blind within the frame, you can take 4 cm into account. The aluminum roll is about 4 cm shorter than the width between the frames.
Cut the curtain fabric to size
If you have shortened the aluminum roll, you also have to shorten the curtain fabric. The easiest thing is a large floor space on which you can roll out the entire curtain. Cut the curtain to the desired width with the scissors along one side. You can also adjust the length if you want the curtain shorter.
Hang up the roller blind
If you have shortened the roll and curtain, you can mount the caps on it. On one side of the roll comes a cap with a pin. On the other side comes a cap with the cord. You can now stick the curtain onto the roll by sticking the edge of the curtain to the adhesive edge on the roll. Do this carefully so that the fabric is straight on.
Now attach the supports to the frame where the roller blind will hang. You can now hang the roller blind in between. This can be rolled up or rolled out. That does not matter. Rolled up is more convenient.
