The thin ice that Porsche dared to step on is evidently proving to be stable. When the Swabians announced that they would be building a purely electric sports car with the Taycan, there was great skepticism. In the meantime there is no longer any doubt: the adventure with the power connection is not only extremely exciting, but also extremely successful. Porsche has already sold around 45,000 Taycans since 2019, most of them in the USA, China and Germany.
Now the Porsche is already entering the third model year with the plug. The Stuttgart-based company does not like to look at the optics yet. The first age wrinkles should not be smoothed out until next year. With the current mini facelift, the Stuttgart-based company is concentrating on three main areas: range, connectivity and colors.

Technical tricks for 25 km more range
Let’s start with the range of action of the cordless athlete. The range will not be re-homologated, but a few extra kilometers are teased out with little technical tricks. In the all-wheel drive models, for example, the electric freewheel in the partial load range will in future be almost completely decoupled. The drive then has a complete break when sailing and at a standstill. Porsche says that this gives you up to 25 kilometers more range.
When it comes to fast charging, the Taycan wants to increase its speed. The so-called Turbo Charging Planner now allows the high-voltage battery to be charged at higher temperatures. As a result, the battery comes to the optimal “comfortable temperature” earlier and can be charged more quickly with a higher charge level.
Taycan with new functions
For the child in the man (or woman), the Swabians have integrated a new function in the Porsche Connect app, with which one can reap astonished looks. If you tick Remote Park Assist in the surcharge list in the future, you can use your smartphone to automatically park and unpark your Taycan or maneuver your car out of the garage without having to be behind the wheel yourself. The system also detects parking spaces, measures them, and parks – if there is enough space – via the app as if by magic. In terms of connectivity, Porsche is only making up for what it has missed, is now finally also integrating Android Auto into the multimedia world of its PCM, improving the voice assistant Voice Pilot and accelerating the computing power of the navigation system.
Porsche is working on the adaptive sound carpet
A highly innovative app that rolls out a kind of adaptive sound carpet for the driver is still in the beta phase. True to the motto: if you want to hear, you can feel. For the implementation, Porsche is working “with the most well-known film composers in Hollywood” according to its own admission. Connected to the Taycan’s on-board systems, the app analyzes the current driving style and currently offers the driver up to eight different programs. This is not about the question “Abba or AC / DC?”, But rather endless musical loops – from calming to animating – that vary daily. Sounds a bit metaphysical, but it is definitely something. Those who get involved in the new sound experience actually get out more relaxed.
New colors round off the facelift
At the end of the model update in 2021, Porsche will paint the world as colorful as we like it. In addition to the 17 standard colors, you can now order your Taycan 63 more colors that Porsche has already offered for its sports cars in the past. The comeback of cult colors such as acid green, star ruby or rieviera blue costs around 8,000 euros extra, but is topped by the new “Color of your choice Plus” range. For a small sum in the double-digit thousands, Porsche will henceforth add any desired color for the Taycan. (Text: th / sp-x | Images: manufacturer)
