A cybersecurity company with a reputation for being one of the best in the world has itself fallen victim to a sophisticated hacking attack. The company, the American FireEye, has announced this itself.
FireEye says it is a highly intelligent hacking attack that uses techniques they have not seen before. According to the company, only a state can be behind it.
The hackers looted tools that FireEye uses to test the security of its customers. Many of those customers are government agencies. FireEye has in the past investigated hacking attacks on American authorities involved in elections. FireEye does not want to say who the hackers are, but according to The New York Times there are indications that they are Russian intelligence services.
The company has engaged the FBI, as well as partners such as Microsoft. The FBI is also convinced that the attack was carried out on behalf of a state.
FireEye has now provided its customers with a series of countermeasures to protect themselves.
