The Pomeranian, also called pomeranian dog, can rightly be called a very small dog. In England they sometimes call this dog ‘teacup pomerian’ and in the Netherlands this dog is sometimes called ‘mini-pomerian’. This small dog with a thick coat looks like a fluffy ball of wool. This dwarf dog is gaining popularity and you see the dog more and more often in the streets. On the one hand because it is a manageable size dog and on the other hand because the dog has a sweet, lively and watchful character. This dog has more to offer than its size suggests. What exactly is it for a dog?
Pomeranian or Pomeranian, the basis
This dog owes its name to the original breeding area, namely the German / Polish Pomerania. It is a smaller version of the keeshond. It is an old breed, because the dogs were there four centuries before Christ. At the time, they were mostly yard guards. From the early 19th century, we see the Pomeranian or Pomeranian appear more and more in Western Europe. Today, this dog is mainly bred as a companion dog.

Appearance
This very cute little dog is spicier than one might think, judging by its small size.
Build and coat
The Pomeranian or Pomeranian has a height between 19 and 21 centimeters and the weight can vary from a minimum of 1.5 to a maximum of 4 kilograms. Although the difference between male and female is not very big in these small dogs, the males generally grow to be slightly larger and heavier than the females. The dog’s chest is slightly forward and ensures that the dog has a proud posture. A pleasant walk with the owner is nice, but they are not dogs that have the build to take very long walks.
The coat has two layers and consists of a short, thick undercoat and an outer coat with long straight hair. Some long-haired dog breeds have longer hair on the legs, but the Pomeranian has a short coat on the legs. The coat tapers from the top of the paw to the foot.
To keep the coat nice and fluffy, it should be combed well two to three times a week. This way you prevent the coat from tangling. Teach the dog from an early age that combing the coat is part of it. Then the dog can get used to it.

The dog comes in several officially recognized colors, namely:
- black
- brown
- Orange
- cream
- Champagne
- creme-sable
- orange-sable
- black and tan
- particolour *
* Particolour means, always a coat with a white base with spots in the colors black, brown and / or orange.
Head and tail
The cup is wedge-shaped with high erect, small ears and a small nose with a black / brown stop. Because the silky soft hairs on the forehead are full and come out slightly, the eyes seem to be a bit deeper. The tail is short and lies on the back. The hairs are long and straight here too.

Character
This little dog is lively, proud, watchful and a bit stubborn. That watchfulness in the dog is made clear by the standard barking when a person is standing in front of the door or an unknown person approaches. After all, they have to inform the boss. The watchful nature certainly does not make it an aggressive dog. All in all, they are especially happy and friendly dogs, with a curious and eager nature.
The dogs are very involved with the people they live with and they therefore prefer to stay in the immediate vicinity of humans. Some attention and playing with the dog is greatly appreciated by the Pomeranian.
Small dog, big gesture
The Pomeranian or Pomeranian sometimes needs to be protected from himself because he thinks he is bigger than he really is. For example, he can bark at a large dog without looking or blushing if he does not like something or he thinks he has to protect the owner. Now more small dogs think they are the size of a wolf, only this small dog can also break a leg relatively quickly.
The fact that the dog can break something relatively quickly can also be a concern if you leave the dog alone with a small child while playing.
Health aspects and life expectancy
These dogs have an increased risk of patellar luxation, which is a dislocation of the kneecap. In addition, the fontanelle on the cup closes more slowly than in other dogs and sometimes it does not close completely. Furthermore, no specific health complaints are known with this breed.
Small dogs are on average somewhat older than large dogs. This little dog has an average life expectancy for its size. The dogs normally live to be between 12 and 15 years old.
Cost
The costs of the Pomeranian or Pomeranian can vary widely, but they are never cheap dogs. Depending on, among other things, his pedigree and how prominent the breed characteristics are present in the dog, the costs can add up. At least you get up pretty quickly? 1,200 increasing to about ?? 4,000.
Finally
This dwarf dog is a proud and watchful animal with a cheerful and friendly character. The dog is eager to learn, curious, always in for a game and especially wants a lot of attention from the owner.
