Officials have rushed to evacuate tourists from the area as the “Pai River” overflowed, flooding several resorts in Mae Hong Son province early in the morning. Rainfall is being closely monitored in upstream areas.
On September 25, Anake Pantayom, the Pai District Chief, reported that heavy rains began at 3 AM, causing the Pai River to overflow and flood numerous resorts including Pai Riverside Resort, Golden Hut, Cannary Guesthouse, Pai in Dream Guesthouse, and several local homes close to the riverbank.
As water levels continued to rise, two Israeli tourists were stranded at the Pai in Dream Guesthouse, and eight others at the Pai Riverside Resort. Officials worked to safely evacuate foreign tourists, primarily Europeans, with no reported injuries or casualties by 6 AM when water levels began to recede as the rain stopped.
In addition to assisting with the evacuation, the tourist police and local agencies provided drinking water, food, and clothing to the tourists, and arranged new accommodation. The Pai district also prepared to accommodate evacuees at Wat Pa Kam and the district hall due to the uncertain situation.
Subsequently, Chuchip Pongchai, the governor of Mae Hong Son province, instructed the Pai disaster prevention and mitigation center to monitor rainfall in upstream areas and provide assistance to both tourists and residents affected by the continuous rain.
The flooding has impacted the Pai area, with reports indicating that the heavy rain caused the Pai River and other rivers to overflow, affecting several villages in the Mae Hi and Wiang Nai areas.
