The Waasland is a geographic and historical region located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. It consists of ten municipalities. Where is the Waasland?
The Waasland is a region located in East Flanders. It is bordered by the Ghent-Terneuzen canal, the Dutch border, the Scheldt and the Durme. It consists of the following municipalities: Kruibeke, Beveren, Zwijndrecht, Sint-Gillis-Waas, Stekene, Sint-Niklaas, Moerbeke, Lokeren, Temse and Waasmunster. The city of Sint-Niklaas is the capital of the Waasland.
The Wase Pie
This Wase flan is also well known outside the Waasland. When it was a fair, this flan could not be missed on the festive table. Most bakers in the Waasland also sell these tasty and simple cakes.
Supplies for a large flan (eight to ten people)
- 300 g gingerbread
- 75 g speculaas
- 50 g rusks
- 8 dl whole milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar
- 100 g brown sugar
- 20 g flour
- Butter (for the mold)
- Baking pan or oven dish
Crumble the gingerbread, speculaas and rusks. Mix and add the milk. Let the crumbled biscuits and gingerbread steep with the milk. Mix until smooth with the hand blender. Split the eggs. Beat the yolks with the flour and sugar. Add a pinch of cinnamon and possibly a little candy syrup. Mix the yolk mixture with the cookie mixture. Beat the egg whites with the vanilla sugar until stiff. First, fold the egg white carefully into the mixture. Grease an oven dish well with butter. Spoon the mixture into it. Smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for an hour in the center of the oven at 180 ° C.
New potatoes in fries fat
This is a classic from my mom, grandmother and great-grandmother’s kitchen. With new potatoes you can make many tasty dishes, but this remains my favorite! You don’t need a lot of ingredients. However, the preparation can be time-consuming. Take for this recipe only small potatoes. You can serve the baked potatoes with all kinds of meat and fish (for example: pork tenderloin, steak, chicken, white fish) and it also goes well with vegetables, both cold (tomato, cucumber, ??) and warm vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli , carrots). This recipe can only be made in the new potato season: mid-May to mid-August.
Necessities for four people
- 1.5 kg small potatoes (seems a lot, but they are so tasty that they are all eaten here)
- Deep fryer and fries fat
Take the small potatoes. Scoop the potatoes, that is, you have to go over the top sheet of the potato with a potato knife. Only the dirt is removed from the potato, but a skin remains on the potato. This sheet is necessary! You do this with all potatoes. Halve them or cut them in four. They should not be larger than 2 cm. Cook the potatoes briefly until tender (usually no more than 4 minutes). Be sure to stick with it, they should not be overcooked. Turn on the deep fryer at 150 ° C. Bake the potatoes for the first time. Let them cool down and bake them a second time at 190 ° C before serving.
Fries with fried egg
This is also a classic from Mother’s kitchen. When you tell others about fries with fried eggs, you see a lot of surprise. Still, this is a great combination. Dip your crispy fries in the egg yolk for a delicious flavor combination. Many children love this. It is also a very simple dish. Most families always have frozen chips and eggs at home, so you can put this dish on the table in ten minutes.
Necessities for two people
- Four or five eggs
- Frozen chips or homemade chips
- Pepper and salt
Turn on the fryer. Rinse the vegetables. Cut the tomatoes and cucumber into pieces and slices. Put the outer leaves of the chicory and cut it. Place the tomatoes and cucumber pieces in a bowl. Put the chicory in another bowl and mix in a little mayonnaise. Heat a pan with a knob of butter, the pan should be big enough to fry all the eggs. Put the fries in the deep fryer and fry them golden yellow. Carefully break the eggs over the pan. They must be fried eggs, so do not open them brusquely. Reduce the heat or reduce it yourself and let the eggs simmer in the pan. Finish with salt and pepper. Remove the fries from the fryer and sprinkle with some salt.
