Woman steals brand-new car, claims someone ordered her to do it

A 40-year-old woman, identified as Ms. Kathakanya, has been arrested for stealing a newly registered Honda HR-V SUV in Bangkok. The incident occurred on October 2nd at The Street Ratchada parking lot, where the car was taken with the owner’s cat inside. Police apprehended her later that evening in Lad Phrao district. She has a history of mental health issues, having undergone treatment for 2-3 years, and claims she was instructed by someone to steal the vehicle.

Authorities have charged her with theft and damage to property. Following her arrest, police began the investigation and contacted the suspect’s family for medical documents to confirm her mental health status as she was incoherent during questioning. The family reported that she has been speaking incoherently and has exhibited erratic behavior during episodes.

The police chief, Pol. Col. Prasopchok, stated that the investigation team has interviewed seven witnesses, including the vehicle owner and security personnel, and plans to speak with a few more witnesses. Currently, there have been no prior criminal records found for the suspect. Meanwhile, the stolen cat has been returned to its owner.

Pol. Col. Prasopchok emphasized the need for additional investigation regarding her mental condition, which may influence her ability to face trial. If deemed unfit, she would be sent for medical treatment rather than prosecution. The initial charges have been set as theft and damaging property.
