Yala bomb attack targets armored pickup, injures 2 police officers

In Raman District, Yala Province, a bombing attack targeted an armored pickup truck carrying police officers during a security patrol, resulting in injuries to two officers from the Tha Thong Police Station.

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on October 14, 2024, police officials including Lieutenant Colonel Surin Sangsaet and Usman Zahab from the district’s administration led a team to investigate the bombing incident. The attack occurred in Baan Thalanae, Moo 3, Tha Thong Subdistrict.

The attack happened on a rural road about 800 meters past Baan Wangphaya School. The targeted Toyota armored pickup truck suffered significant shrapnel damage on the left side, with eight scratches on its armored glass and three broken tires. The injured officers, identified as Police Corporal Suriyah Ramsawat and Police Sergeant Apivath Thongkuet, experienced severe hearing loss and were transported to Ramaman Hospital.

At the scene, a one-meter-wide and 50-centimeter-deep crater was found on the road, scattering electronic components, shrapnel, and orange picnic gas canisters. Nearby electricity poles and trees were also damaged.

Preliminary investigations suggested that before the bombing, Lieutenant Colonel Surin had ordered a patrol with several officers in three pickup trucks. It is believed that assailants were observing police activities from nearby foliage and had buried an explosive device weighing at least 25 kilograms beneath the road surface, triggering it using a communication radio when the last police vehicle passed, resulting in the injuries and damage. Authorities suspect the attack was orchestrated by insurgents aiming to harm law enforcement personnel.
