A recent car bombing in Tak Bai near the residence of the district chief involved a vehicle belonging to the wife of a ranger. The car was hijacked by armed assailants disguised as military personnel who used an M16 rifle during the theft. Authorities suspect that the same group was responsible for a previous bombing at a gold shop in October 2024.
The bomb attack occurred at 10:15 PM on September 29, 2024, in front of a location across from the residence of Trainee Lieutenant Jirath Sirivallap, resulting in property damage and injuries to two soldiers. On September 30, 2024, officials conducted an investigation, discovering damaged vehicle parts and a 50-kilogram homemade bomb placed in a gas cylinder.
Further investigation revealed damage to the security post at the entrance of a flat housing area and to nearby residences, which suffered roof and window damage due to the blast. Debris from the explosion littered the area.
On the night of the attack, a woman reported the theft of her MG vehicle, which was used in the bombing, confirming the assailants were also wearing masks and military-like clothing to disguise their identities. Surveillance footage later confirmed the suspects using the hijacked car at the bombing site before fleeing.
During the bombing, two soldiers who were on their way to get food suffered burn injuries and were treated at local hospitals. Officials believe the attack was orchestrated by members of a separatist group known for previous violent acts in the region.
