Chiang Mai water levels drop but Pa Phrao community still suffers

Chiang Mai – The Ping River in Chiang Mai has begun to recede, allowing businesses in the Night Bazaar-Chiang Klan area to start cleaning up. However, the community of Pa Prao Nok remains severely affected, with water levels reaching neck depth in certain areas, forcing residents to swim and request food and assistance.

As of 5 PM on September 26, 2024, reports indicated that the Ping River overflowed into the economic district and the Pa Prao Nok community, which is situated near the river and at one of the lowest elevations. The flooding has heavily impacted monks, locals, and residents of dormitories, as water levels have reached neck level in some places, leaving individuals unable to exit their homes due to concerns over their belongings, with many opting to sleep on the second floor.

Emergency services and military personnel have set up assistance points in Pa Prao Nok, where locals have provided food and water to first responders. The water levels still remain high, making access impossible for regular vehicles, with only boats and military vehicles being able to navigate in and out.

By 6 PM, the water level at the P.1 measurement point at Nawarath Bridge was reported at 4.54 meters, with a continuous decrease of 3-5 centimeters per hour expected to persist.

By 7 PM, the water level had decreased further to 4.49 meters.

Additionally, water levels in some areas have receded, especially in the Night Bazaar, where water has dropped below sidewalk level, allowing many shops to begin cleaning. Businesses have expressed urgency in cleaning ahead of time, as it will be more difficult once the water fully recedes. They are eager to reopen immediately if there is no further rainfall, as some items have been damaged and require restoration.
