Chiang Mai Waterworks warns of Ping River flood risk tonight

The Chiang Mai Irrigation Office No. 1 has issued a sixth warning regarding the critical water level of the Ping River, predicting that from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM tonight, the water level is expected to reach between 4.95 and 5.05 meters. This warning affects seven risk zones.

On September 25, 2024, Director Athawit Nakwatchara of the Irrigation Office reported that heavy rainfall across Chiang Mai due to the “Zulic” storm and a low-pressure system has led to this critical water level forecast. The maximum flow of water through station P.1 at Nawarat Bridge is estimated to be approximately 630-650 cubic meters per second.

Surveys from the flooding event in 2022 highlighted the following risk zones based on water levels at Nawarat Bridge:

Zone 1: +3.70 meters – Areas include parts of Ban Pa Phrao Nok.

Zone 2: +3.90 meters – Affected areas include Charoen Prathet Road and Montfort Primary School.

Zone 3: +4.00 meters – Areas affected include Ban Dent and local electricity authority.

Zone 4: +4.10 meters – Areas include Rim Ping Supermarket and local temples.

Zone 5: +4.20 meters – Affected areas include Nong Hoi Market and several schools.

Zone 6: +4.30 meters – Affected areas include Chang Klan Road and the Night Bazaar.

Zone 7: +4.60 meters – Areas include Kad Luang and several local streets.

The public is advised to closely monitor the water situation, check the stability of flood protection structures, and reinforce levees in low-lying areas. Machinery and equipment should be ready to provide immediate assistance to mitigate impact.

Residents living in flood-prone areas without permanent protective barriers are warned to prepare in advance.
